Appraisal and revalidation support for medical professionals

I recently attended The Red Whale GP Update Course. A first for me. Especially useful is the Appraisal and Revalidation Action Pack, which compliments the now famous and substantial course handbook. It’s full of ideas for audits for appraisal. Let me share a small selection here….

  • Antiplatelet therapy post MI. For most patients this will be aspirin for life, plus one other for a year. Has this ‘one other’ been stopped after a year?
  • Antibiotics associated with greater risk of C. difficile: cephalosporins, fluoroquinolones and clindamycin. Run a search of these prescriptions in the last three months. Was an antibiotic needed? Was the choice in line with local/national guidance? Was the duration the minimum appropriate?
  • Allopurinol for gout. Serum urate checked in the last year? Below target (360 micromoles per litre)? Dietary advice given? CVD risk assessment undertaken?

There are many more great ideas in the Action Pack. Thanks to GP Update for these suggestions and for the course!
